tinfoil recorder / i am data is a participatory room instrument in which sheets of aluminum foil cover the gallery floor. Participants fold the foil inward from the edges, sounding the space while steadily shrinking the area left to occupy. As the room contracts, participants step out one by one until a single performer remains among the accumulated folds.
The work records itself through the transformation of material, the compression of space, and the embodied experience of collective action. Sound is held in the physical alteration of the recording medium itself, and the traces of participation stay embedded in the resulting sculptural form.
First developed for a participatory project initiated by Lucky Dragons, the piece has grown through a series of collective performances with artists, educators, students, and members of the Chumash community in Santa Barbara. Each realization transforms the room through a gradual accumulation of folds, leaving a temporary composition shaped by sound, movement, and shared action.
